Cire Community school offers its students a number of exciting initiatives including the ability to achieve a major milestone in the form of their Victorian learner permit.
Lilydale, Monbulk and Yarra junction campuses host Changing Gears
This year, the Changing Gears learner permit program was held at the Lilydale, Monbulk and Yarra Junction campuses with students at each embracing the opportunity.
Beer goggles a hit
Emily, Jacob, Remo and Tyler at the Lilydale campus loved working on their driving attitude by experiencing how drinking can affect your senses with beer goggles. These were provided by Changing Gears collaboration with Road Safe SouthEast.
VicRoads team members Shahnaz, Nilanka, Alex and Disna were delighted when the students showed all they had learnt at VicRoads.
A lesson in civics at Monbulk
Monbulk campus students learnt not only about safe driving and the Victorian road rules, but also about being respectful and kind members of their community in an increasingly polarised and bigoted world.
“I’m really proud of you all,” facilitator Nikki praised the students as they not only passed their tests at VicRoads with flying colours but also earned praise from VicRoads manager Melissa and team member Sarah for being exemplary ambassadors for their school.

Striving for success at Yarra Junction
The Yarra Junction students showed tremendous improvement. One of the class members had attempted the Vic Roads Learner Permit Test Online twelve times. She told facilitator Linda it had made her feel, “Like a failure.”
“That feeling is what the Changing Gears program is designed to transform,” Linda told her and her classmates, “with our easy to learn techniques we ensure that everyone is set up for success.”
And true to Linda’s word, all students passed their learner permit test at VicRoads, one scoring perfect marks.
Changing Gears sets students up for success
“Setting young people up for success now and in the future is what Changing gears is all about,” facilitators Linda and Nikki agree. And with the help of the wonderful Cire staff, including program coordinator Jody, Cire Lilydale Principal Steven and the fabulous VicRoads Mitcham staff we are able to turn the desire to succeed into a reality.

Possibilities open up
Driving opens up so many possibilities for disadvantaged young people. Classes are supportive, students and trainers inspire each other, showing the way for young people to overcome their obstacles to driving and experience success.
