Cire staff and students from the Yarra Junction, Monbulk and Berwick, campuses turned the community school into a hub for learning about safer vehicles during the last week of March 2025.
Yarra Junction staff and students impressed by website
The Yarra Junction program was particularly well attended with students learning all about how to select a car with a great safety rating, no matter what your budget is.
Students at all three campuses enjoyed the activity of plugging vehicles into the TAC “Howsafeisyourcar” website.
“Wow, I can’t believe that!” was a common reply as everyone was surprised by how safe or unsafe their friends’ or carers’ vehicles were. Staff too, participated and were left incredulous over their own vehicles.
“I think I’ll be looking for a new car!” one staff member joked.

Each campus also plunged into meeting the odd-looking Graham, a fictional being specially adapted for surviving road collisions. They also delved into insurance, registration, car maintenance and important vehicle features.
Under the hood a hit
A favourite activity at all three campuses was looking under the hood with expert mechanics Tristram (Yarra Junction and Monbulk campuses) and Dewa (Berwick campus). Students were especially delighted when Dewa, showed them features of facilitator Nikki’s hybrid four-wheel drive at Berwick, then compared them with those of his own car.
Dewa also went on to talk to several of the young men about bicycle and lawn mower maintenance, staying after the formal class. Not only was the program a success but new friendships were formed and staff and students went away empowered with knowledge.

Possibilities open up
Knowledge opens up so many possibilities for disadvantaged young people. Classes are supportive, students and trainers inspire each other, showing the way for young people to overcome their obstacles to driving a safer vehicle and experiencing success.
