Excited new learner drivers Alexander (left) and Isobel (right) with VicRoads team member Sharon (second from left) and Changing Gears Head Trainer Linda (second from right) at VicRoads Seaford.
For her latest NDIS Changing Gears program, Head Trainer Linda enjoyed the support of the Brotherhood of Saint Laurence in Frankston. It was at their Thompson Street facility, she met Tamika, also known as Meeks, Isobel, and Alexander.
Anxiety loomed large
All three of the students experienced high levels of anxiety.
To begin with, Meeks was so overwhelmed she was unsure whether she was going to stay for the whole day. However, after Linda reassured her she could take as many pauses as she needed, Meeks was able to send her carer home after the first break.
Alexander was a personality with a passion for order and timeliness and kept the group on track.
Isobel was eager to get her L’s and was very excited at the prospect of driving.
Confidence grew with time and practice
All three participants showed great tenacity and attended all three days. They actively participated in discussions and enjoyed group activities as their confidence grew.
On the day of the test, Meeks was the first to go through and passed with flying colours. Her Mum, who had driven her to the Seaford VicRoads testing site, was really proud of her accomplishment.
VicRoads Seaford staff are super supportive
Next up was Alexander, who struggled with anxiety. This got in the way of being successful in his first attempt at the learner permit test. Isobel too, had a similar experience. In addition, both Isobel and Alexander struggled with literacy issues.
VicRoads customer service team member Sarah was very kind and encouraged both young people to use the headphones provided, which helped a lot. With Sarah’s support, the two overcame their intense feelings of anxiety and passed their tests.
Teamwork makes the dream work
Needless to stay, there was a great deal of celebration in Seaford that day! The Changing Gears program very much appreciates the continued support of the Brotherhood of Saint Laurence in Frankston and of VicRoads Seaford and their wonderful staff.
It is this combination of people and organisations that are integral to the success of our young people and the fulfillment of their dream to drive.
Possibilities open up
Driving opens up so many possibilities for disadvantaged young people. Classes are supportive, students and trainers inspire each other, showing the way for young people to overcome their obstacles to driving and experience success.
