Anglicare’s Box Hill offices were the venue for their September 2024 Changing Gears program facilitated by Head Trainer Linda. It was there, Linda was thrilled to meet Jai, Corey and Bianca.
Quiet then not so quiet
All was quiet at the beginning of the class with three keen young people wanting to get on with the work of passing their learner permit tests.
As the program went on and the students began to feel comfortable, Bianca blossomed. She enjoyed relating her experiences of being a passenger to what the group was learning.
Active learning
Corey seemed to learn best when walking around.
“That’s just fine,” said Head Trainer Linda, “some people are very active listeners. Moving their bodies can help them learn and Changing Gears is all about learning”
Jai always showed up with a smile on his face. Even when the group had to change training rooms on the third day, he remained cheerful and upbeat.
IDs are key!
The group was very attentive and learned well, except for one thing. Although the importance of having the correct ID was stressed every day, two students got to find out how strict VicRoads is about having original copies of ID. They had to return home to get their birth certificates before sitting their tests!
Once IDs were organised, Anglicare Better Futures Development Coach April was thrilled to see all three learners past their test with the kindly support of Ringwood VicRoads team member Sarah.
Enthusiasm for the Changing Gears learning model
“It’s a great day for Anglicare and we want more of our clients to be supported getting their L’s in this way,” April commented.
Linda and our team couldn’t agree more. With our facilitators and the helpful staff at VicRoads, Changing Gears can help anyone with literacy challenges achieve their driving goals.
Possibilities open up
Driving opens up so many possibilities for disadvantaged young people. Classes are supportive, students and trainers inspire each other, showing the way for young people to overcome their obstacles to driving and experience success.
