Grinding and striding in Geelong

Excited new learner drivers Evander (second from left) with his mum (left), and Laura (second from right) and her dad (right), at VicRoads Geelong.

Stride/headspace provides many great supports for the young people of Geelong. Not the least of which was recently the provision of a Changing Gears "Get your Ls" program.

Laura and Evander took time out of their September holidays to attend.

Bonding over gaming

The two quickly found they had a love of gaming in common and had many fun chats with facilitator Nikki over the wonderful food provided by program Coordinator Tatiana and team member Isabelle.

Getting back to grinding!

Nikki learnt some new lingo from her students. And at the end of each break, prompted by Evander, would grin and say, “Let’s get back to grinding!”

The grinding clearly worked well as over the course of the four days, although they were worried about sitting tests, both Laura's and Evander’s scores rose to perfect hundred percents.

VicRoads Geelong staff thrilled at students' results

The helpful staff at Geelong VicRoads were thrilled when both students passed with flying colours.

Evander’s mum and Laura’s dad were there to celebrate their achievements.

“Evander has learnt a lot about how he learns,” Nikki explained to his mum.

“Yes, we’ll take this information to his school to help him in sitting VCE,” his mum commented.

Learning about learning

Sometimes there can be far more learnt than Victorian road rules and safe driving and Changing Gears would like to thank Tatiana and the team at Stride/headspace for making room for such a wonderful learning environment.

Possibilities open up

Driving opens up so many possibilities for disadvantaged young people. Classes are supportive, students and trainers inspire each other, showing the way for young people to overcome their obstacles to driving and experience success.
